Assertion Analysis #10

Cotton Mather is a Puritan and American minister who strongly opposed witches. He believed that they were associates or influenced by the Devil. As a man of religious literacy, he explained in various ways how to not be influenced by these witches through the work of literature and speeches. Cotton Mather explains how horrid witches and their witch craft are. They creep and hide from the shadows so they won't be spotted. As they do that, they blend in with the crowd, and just watch. They are delighted by the sights they see.

The assertion by Cotton Mather holds various types of rhetoric devices he had used. Specifically, he used the rhetoric device, Irony. By using irony, his quote was depicted as hypocrisy considering that he is a Puritan using the language he hates the most. His quote sounds as if he was casting a spell like a witch that he detests, which is irony. The effect on the audience is that they will think differently of Mather. To use the language of something you hate is like eating mangos that you strongly dislike. This quote can lead to confusion upon the audience as well.

Assertion Analysis #9

In the quote stated by Martin Luther King Jr, he is explaining how the situation concerning negroes haven't changed and will not change with the future coming leaders. He believes that the current and future leaders will leave no actual effect on negros no matter how hard they try. Also, when referring to white people, they have tried to change and make African Americans assimilate to their culture. White people think of it as changing blacks into their culture, while black people think of it as destroying their culture and pride. The negroes efforts to change and fight for their pride is plummeting towards the ground. America has not paid attention towards blacks and their problems, such as economics. As a result, negros were willing to cause uproars and riots.

Martin Luther King Jr's main idea is expressed through rhetoric and literary devices. One of these rhetoric devices he uses is Repetition. Martin Luther King Jr. has repeated the term, "negro," many times throughout his assertion. For example, when he claims, "I don’t think these leaders will be able to make a real dent in the Negro community..." By using repetition and repeating a specific word, he was able to emphasize that the meaning of this whole quote was his explanation of negroes. As the audience or readers see the constant repeating of negroes, they know that the issue of negroes is a serious deal.

Assertion Analysis #8

John Winthorp's assertion explains how when he and other Puritans come into the nation, everyone's eyes were set on them. Everyone includes all people in the nation, not just other religious beings. He explains how he and his fellow Puritans are the chosen ones of God. If they were to do something wrong, such as upset God, it would cause God to withdraw his help from them. In other words, God would turn his back on the Puritans. Thus, everyone would all look upon them and curse them. Since they were the chosen ones by God, everyone would not look up to God anymore due to the Puritans actions. They are the servants of God and the their faces would be shamed. Instead of praying, the people would be cursing upon them and God. Which is why they must not fail.

Winthorp, a Puritan, used many rhetoric devices to show the audience his main point. Some may include using Tone, Ethos, and Connotation. The most effective rhetoric device would be connotation. Winthorp used many negative connotations throughout this assertion. Some examples of negative connotation words he used were curses, falsely, shame, and withdraw. By using these negative connotations, he was able to show how doing something wrong in their religious beliefs would cause a terrible result. In addition, by using connotation, the audience is able to understand the negative idea he is portraying.

The effectiveness on the audience is that they are able to understand the main point of what Winthorp is portraying. Furthermore, the effect on the audience is that they know that as Puritans, they must not upset God. Otherwise, they will be cursed and blamed. Also, other people would begin to dislike God. His purpose to tell other Puritans that they must not fail, was effect towards his audience.

Assertion Analysis #7

In Sitting Bull's (Hunkpapa) quote, he is referring to his people and the "white man." At first, he indicates that he is a "red man" which can be deciphered as a Native American. He is saying that it is not a destiny for his people to be assimilated to the white kind, as to try to inherent and adapt to their white culture and disowning their own native culture. In addition, it is not necessary for Native Americans to be like the White people. He is stating that they may be poor, but they are free and no white man should control them. He may be indicating that his culture might die out soon, but he has a sense of hope for it to continue forward.

Sitting Bull used specific rhetorical devices into his assertion. Specifically, he uses the rhetorical device known as syntax. He adds long sentences into his assertion, along with the majority of short sentences. He also uses a long periodic wait into a few of his short sentences. These specific sentences have a short statement following along with a reason afterward. For example, "We are poor... but we are free." The result of using this rhetorical device is to show the reader or listener what the main point of his assertion is through short sentences that are clear and visual. It also causes the audience to understand that white people will not control his people.

Assertion Analysis #6

In the stated quote by Chief Joseph, he explains how he is tired and exhausted of all the various hurrendous acts of killing and murder. Furthermore, he is also tired of fighting. In this assertion, he is stating the different problems that occur during his time. For example, fighting, chiefs and old men dying, and struggling to survive in the freezing cold. Chief Joseph surrenders due to his current condition during that time and how he was tired of all the problems. In his percpective, he is saying that surrender is freedom at last. Surrender will break all his ties with the problems that occured while he was fighting. Therefore, it is not a weakness, but instead a method of strength. He does not want to admit defeat, but emphasizes that surrender is better. He is suggesting that the rest of his people should surrender along with him.

Chief Joseph uses different kinds of rhetoric devices in his quotation. Such examples may include the use of Pathos, syntax, and repition of diction. In this particular assertion, he uses Pathos to emphasize a tone of emotion towards the audience. His purpose was to make the audience feel a certain feeling, such as sadness, to make people understand his point of view. By using Pathos, he was able to express how surrender is not an action of cowardness, but a method of having to not experience any more of the terrible problems happening while fighting. An example of using Pathos would be when he said, "It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death."

Assertion Analysis #5

In the assertion quoted by John Lame Deer (Lakota), he explains how his people may seem like they have problems, but in reality, his people are on the right track and have survived without the needs of the white men. It seems like he is stating how his people's lives were difficult, and how it would usually be a problem for the white men, but it wasn't as a problem for his people because they were still able to manage without those fundamental needs. In addition, he describes how the white men tell them that these fundamental things are needed to have a civilized society. Throughout this assertion, the author is explaining how before the white men, referred to as "they," arrived into his people's society to convert them into a civilized group of people, they were fine as it is with or without the white men. Therefore, he blames the white men.

The author uses various types of rhetoric and literary devices. Naturally, he uses the rhetoric device, Syntax, into his quotation. He basically chooses specific words to join together to create phrases and sentences. For example, when he explains, "...we didn't have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no delinquents. Without a prison, there can be no delinquents. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves." In conclusion, due to the use of syntax, the effect on the audience was to show them his main point. By stating these, the author was able to influence the audience to understand his point. Also, by grouping these specific words, the audience was able to interpret what happens after the other and how each of those sentences connect together to prove a point.

Assertion Analysis #4

In the assertion provided, Poe specifies that an author must not think about what he/she will include in their story, but instead to think what effect will it bring amongst the audience. If an author doesn't apply the effect they intended to put on the audience, then that author has failed their first step and therefore, the whole story. For an author to be successful in his/her writing, they must be unique in their writing. In addition, he explains that if an author is to succeed with this "Unique of Effect," then they will achieve the fullest satisfactory. If not, they will leave the audience blurred and lose their attention. He also explains that a wise author must not start their story with incidents and the event, but instead an effect that the whole story will be about. Therefore, everything in the story must lead up to that effect.

Edgar Allen Poe's style in his assertion contemplates to people what his actual reason for this writing is about. He uses literary devices such as metaphor, figure of speech, and diction. He uses the rhetoric device, metaphor, to show the audience what he really means. For example, when he explains his idea through the metaphor of the painting. Using figure of speech, he was able to use other devices such as metaphor and hyperbole. Poe's style of writing is unique and uses specific nouns to express the ideas he is saying.

Poe's style of writing has encouraged many people to follow his steps and learn from their mistakes. With this specific assertion, the audience was able to interpret what he was saying and therefore, authors were able to learn from the best and become successful authors. Poe has exerted many of his knowledge towards us.

Assertion Analysis #3

Jonathan Swift's view of the American Dream can be interpretted in many different ways. The main idea is that mortal man is like a broom. They become soiled in the process of aging. They are similar to brooms not only because their hair is like the broom's straws, but they are turned upside down. People reveal abuses and sweeps up dirt. In addition, A mortal man can be fake to himself and towards others as well. He also tells us that the mortal man gets critisized by others.

Jonathan's style and technique managed to hook the reader onto his subject. One main literary device he uses is Metaphor. Especially, when explaining how a mortal man is like a broom. The author's tone shows a passion of encouragement and motivation. It is meant to teach the reader what the main idea is. Jonathan also uses Figurative Language into his writing. For example, when he says, "he then flies to art;" it is obvious that he literally doesn't mean flying to art. Therefore concluding that he uses these rhetoric and literary devices into his writing.

The main idea of Jonathan's quote is that Man's fate is either to be kicked out or to be used for critism by others. Another lesson learned by Jonathan is that man criticizes one another and eventually become spoiled in the process. He also says, "we should be apt to ridicule and despise it's vanity." Furthermore, he explains how we are the judges of our own excellencies and other men's doings. In conclusion, Jonathan tells us that the life of a mortal man represents a broom and that we, as people, should look towards ourselves carefully and thoroughly.

Assertion Analysis #2

The author's main point in the assertion quoted is that America is full of indifference. The people in America are unconcerned about what occurs in America. Whether there is a war between America and another country, or there is a death that happens to a common civilian, America is full of indifference. In addition the author also states how the opposite of common ideas like love, beauty, or faith is not what the audience may originally think, but it is indifference. He also states that indifference does not only exist in life, but within both life and death. Furthermore, America lacks in a state of interest and enthusiasm. America isn't expected to be perfect, but she is also inperfect due to the amount of indifference that she has.

The author uses different literary and rhetorical devices to gather the audience's attention. He uses repetition in every sentence of the assertion he quoted. For example, "the opposite of.." and "indifference." Due to his use of repetition, he was able to gather the audience's attention and state the main point of the whole assertion, which is that America is full of indifference. The author of the assertion also uses the literary device, Imagery. He uses words such as beauty, love, ugliness, and hate to point out that the opposite of such imagery is not their original opposite, but it is indifference. In relativness to repetition, he also uses alliteration within his quote.

The following assertion's main point is that America is full of indifference. The citizens within America are uncaring and lack interest. The assertion may have even manipulated the audience to show concern to our country. In addition, the quote represents a message that indifference is a major occasion in America. This can be seen by the following uses of literary and rhetorical devices the other used in order to state his point. The audience of this piece most likely responded with realization and a type of surprised expression. Others may have stayed indifferent.

Assertion Analysis #1

In the Assertion quoted by John Green, he is stating that America's dream is a joke. By using silly statements and words into his assertion, the main point can be stated that The American dream is indeed a joke. For example, when he explains how his parents sacrificed so much for the dream of their son to have sex with a cheerleader. He describes how his parents leave Korea and, one day, dream for their son to lose his virginity to a cheerleader in western Northern Carolina. Furthermore, to also lose it in a women's bathroom in a Waffle House. The Assertion basically explains a silly experience of John Green's that pointed out how the American dream is not how everyone would believe it to be, but for it to be a joke rather than an idolistic dream.

The Assertion quoted by John Green displays a sarcastic and silly mood towards the audience. His style in words displays in a sarcastic way that the American dream is a joke. The Author's style sets the mood and tone for the main point of the assertion. For example, using the last two words, "cheerleader sex," the audience is able to interpret his tone of sarcasm. When comparing both Martin Luther King Jr. to John Green, John's imagery is different from Martin's. John uses a verbal irony and is not as serious as Martin when referring to the American dream. Also, in the beginning of the assertion, his audience is not "Ladies and gentlemen," but "Lady and gentlemen," meaning his audience is different than usual for what people might believe.

Due to this Assertion quoted by John Green, the audience is able to realize that the American dream, is in fact, a joke. It is also obvious that it was meant to make the audience, not only realize that the American dream was a joke, but to laugh as well. In addition, due to that, John Green was able to create a mood of sillyness. In fact, this assertion might even motivate people to have sex with a cheerleader. In conclusion, John Green's main point about the following assertion is that America's dream is not serious, but a joke.
